1. Can our pyrography equipment be used on both leather and wood? Return to top

Yes. Both wood and leather are equally suitable for pyrography. Leather requires less heat than wood so the S Series G4 or G4HW can be used with the control knob turned down as full power would rapidly burn a hole in leather.

2. What is the best wood to use for Pyrography? Return to top

Any wood, so long as it's hard and light in colour! Undoubtedly the best wood is Sycamore, particularly English Sycamore because it is particularly light in colour and has a less pronounced grain pattern than the Sycamore of other countries. Maple, a closely related wood tends to be darker than Sycamore and have a more pronounced grain pattern. Either is capable of being sanded to a very smooth finish so the pyrography tool does not tend to be caught in the grain of the wood, making it both easier to burn and facilitating smoother and more even lines. The next best is Beech and other light coloured hardwoods. In America Basswood is popular (it is closely related to Lime in the UK). Basswood is very light and even in colour but it is softer than Sycamore and doesn't finish as smoothly as Sycamore. Another popular wood is Birch (particularly Finnish) which is similar to Basswood to use but is usually sold as Birch Plywood so it is more economical and is available in large size sheets.

3. I have a S Series (or G4) pyrograph. Can I plug a H Series (or G4HW) holder into my transformer? Return to top

Unfortunately not! As the Solid Point S Series has an output of 12 volts compared to the Hot Wire H Series 2 volts, it would rapidly burn out the nichrome wire, even at the lowest setting (6 volts). It may also damage the transformer so it is not recommended! Sorry, if you would like to change to a Hot Wire pyrography machine you need to buy a complete H Series machine.

4. I have a H Series (or G4HW) pyrograph. Can I use the holder and interchangeable nibs/points of the S Series (or G4). Return to top

No! As the previous answer shows, the H Series and S Series transformers are incompatible. The 2 volts of the H Series transformer would barely warm the points of the S Series holder, but no harm would be done by trying!!

5. I want to burn a logo or name repetitively. Which equipment should I use? Return to top

If you want to repeat the same pattern, logo or text this is known as "branding" and you need a F21 brand holder fitted to a S Series solid point pyrograph with a purpose made brass brand (up to about 1 cm square) or a special branding iron which we can supply (see our Janik.co.uk website and click on BRANDING). We can supply purpose made brass brands (called "dies"), just give us your design and the size required and we will quote you.
